Answers to common questions, and how to reach us.
Does this work without cell service?
Yes. The trail map, routing engine, tide calculator, and sunrise/sunset times all run entirely on your device. You can use every core feature of Acadia Compass in airplane mode.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Acadia Compass has no account system, no sign-up, and no login. You can start using it immediately after installing.
Why does the app need my location in the background?
Background location powers two safety features: sunset-approach alerts, which warn you before dark falls on the trail, and geofenced waypoint narration during the driving tour, which plays historical audio as you pass certain landmarks. You can decline background location and still use the map, routing, and hike-tracking features — you'll just miss those two alerts.
Does my hike data sync across my devices?
Yes, automatically, through Apple's iCloud (CloudKit), tied to your Apple ID. There's no Acadia Compass server involved — your data moves directly between your own devices via Apple's infrastructure.
How do I report a bug or request a trail or data update?
Email support@acadiacompass.com with as much detail as you can — what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. For trail closures or data corrections, include the trail name and what's out of date; closure and status data is sourced from the National Park Service and updated as NPS publishes changes.
