Acadia Compass
Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 16, 2026
Acadia Compass is built to work without a network connection, and that shapes how it handles your data: almost everything happens entirely on your device. There is no Acadia Compass server, no account system, and no analytics or advertising software of any kind in this app. This page explains exactly what data the app touches, why, and where it goes.
Location Data
Acadia Compass uses your location while you're using the app to show your position on the trail map and to plan routes. With your permission, it also uses location in the background for two specific safety features: sunset-approach alerts, which warn you before dark, and geofenced waypoint narration during the driving tour, which plays historical audio as you pass certain landmarks. Your location is never sent to Acadia Compass or to any third party — it is processed entirely on your device.
Health Data
If you record a hike, Acadia Compass writes that workout — activity type, duration, and distance — to Apple Health, so it appears in your fitness history. The app only writes this data; it does not read your existing Health data for any other purpose.
Motion Data
Motion data (from your device's accelerometer and gyroscope) is used only to improve GPS accuracy while a hike is being recorded.
Notifications
Notifications are used only for the features you'd expect: geofenced waypoint narration and safety alerts (sunset approach, Bar Island tidal windows). You can disable notifications at any time in iOS Settings without losing access to any other feature.
iCloud Sync
Your recorded hikes, plans, and preferences sync across your own devices using Apple's CloudKit private database, tied to your Apple ID. This sync happens directly between your devices and Apple's iCloud infrastructure. Acadia Compass has no server of its own, so this data is never visible to us.
Data We Don't Collect
Acadia Compass has no account system, so we never collect your name, email address, or any other sign-up information. The app contains no analytics, advertising, or third-party tracking software of any kind. We do not know how many people use the app, how they use it, or who they are.
Children's Privacy
Acadia Compass is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. Because the app has no account system, no server, and no data collection beyond what's described above, there is nothing to collect from any user regardless of age.
Changes to This Policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date. Continued use of the app after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
